Udawalawe situated in the border of the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces is 228 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport. The Udawalawe nature reserve watered by the Udawalawe River is popularly known as the best place to see large herds of Asian Elephants, sometimes as high as 100 elephants in a herd. The park has also recorded 94 plant, 21 fish, 12 amphibians, 33 reptiles, 184 birds (33 migratory), and 43 mammal species in addition to 135 species of butterflies. Some of the mammals are Sambar Deer, Golden Jackal, Monkeys Fishing cat, Asian Palm Civet and the elusive Leopard. The reptile species include Oriental garden lizards, Mugger crocodiles, Asian water monitors, Bengali monitors, Painted-lip lizards and around 30 species of snakes. Visitors can also the visit the Elephant transit home in the vicinity and see how abandoned baby jumbos are taken care of.
