Sigiriya the famous Rock Fortress in the Sky situated in the central province of Sri Lanka is 146 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport. This UNESCO recognized World Heritage Site is made up of a gigantic column of rock towering up to a height of 200 meters (660 feet) in height. It is believed that Sigiriya is where King Kasyapa (477 - 495 CE) built his palace; a magnificent engineering feat of its time. Some of Sigirya's amazing features include the frescoes of beautiful damsels, pleasure gardens, fountains that indicate incredible irrigation skills and a Lion carved out of rock that serves as the entrance to the summit. On top visitors can witness the remains of the palace while enjoying a panoramic view of the surrounding areas.
