Kitulgala situated in the mountainous central province is 89 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport. Possessing a rare wet zone rain forest, Kitulgala possesses lush green vegetation watered by the mighty Kelani River. It is home to many endemic species of fauna and flora which includes 54 species of birds namely the Green billed coucal, the Chestnut-backed owlet, Yellow-fronted barbet, Ceylon jungle & spur fowl, Layard's parakeet, Red faced malkoha, Ceylon blue magpie, Sri Lanka spot-winged thrush, Grey hornbill, Common hill mynah and Serendip Scops Owl. You may also see many migrant waders travelling through the migration season. Some of the mammals commonly seen here are the Grizzled-tailed giant squirrel and the rarely seen Red slender loris.
