Dambulla situated in the Central Province of Sri Lanka is situated 137 km from the Bandaranaike International Airport. Dambulla is celebrated for its famous cave temple complex, today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This cave complex consisting of five main caves is the largest and best preserved cave complex in Sri Lanka and dates back to the first century BCE. The rock cave which rises 160m (600 ft) in height and 2000 ft in length, houses magnificent statues and precious paintings that relate to the life of the Buddha. This impressive Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka is a popular tourist destination. Another interesting place to visit in Dambulla is the Namal Uyana or Pink Quartz Mountain and the Na (Ironwood) forest consisting of seven mountains that blend into each other. This historically important place is also a natural wonder of nature.
